Toolbox::Education & Leadership

Educational and Leadership Development Programs

Staff in nursing homes have identified education as the best method for learning how to respond to the Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) in people experiencing this condition. Education is essential for implementing evidence-based practice and for promoting person-centered care. In this section of the Toolkit, staff educational programs that address use of non-pharmacological approaches, reduction of antipsychotic medication use in the nursing home, general dementia care education when it includes either of the above, and leadership development for professional staff are identified. These latter programs were included because nursing homes currently lack the strong nursing leadership necessary to implement change in practice. Some of the leadership development programs are specific to the nursing home environment, while others target leadership skill-building in general. For all programs, those that are easily accessible to facilities were selected; where there is a cost for the program, this information is provided.

Four databases are associated with this section of the Toolkit:

Back To The ABC's: Understanding and Responding To Behavior and Psychological Symptoms in Dementia The University of Iowa: College of Nursing Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia are often puzzling, and sometimes are troubling to staff, other residents and family members alike. Compassionate and effective care relies on understanding the problem from the perspective of the person with dementia and accurately assessing a diverse array of factors that may cause or contribute to behavioral symptoms. In this module, the Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) model is applied to the care of persons with dementia. By assessing and changing common antecedents (triggers) and consequences (reactions), caregivers are often able to promote comfort and function for individuals with dementia. Dementia Care: The Quality of Chasm CCAL-Advancing Person-Centered Living The seminal 2001 Institute of Medicine's (IOM) report, Crossing the Quality Chasm, called for a redesign of the nation's healthcare system, and described healthcare in America as impersonal and fragmented. The IOM report stated that a critical element needed in the redesign was a shift to a person-centered approach moving away from the traditional clinician/disease centered approach. The title of this white paper, Dementia Care Quality Chasm, was purposefully selected as a nod to the IOM's red flag warning about our nation's impersonal and fragmented healthcare systems and practices. Overall, dementia care in this country is impersonal and fragmented, and this paper is a call to action to change to what is considered the gold standard-a person-centered approach. Given the already staggering financial and caregiving demands of dementia, the U.S. is facing significant, if not crippling, societal challenges if effective person-centered systems and practices are not implemented soon to address and better manage the care, services, and supports for people living with dementia and their care partners. They dread the call in the middle of the night from the nurse telling us about the elderly patient who is either trying to kick his way out of bed, pull out his IV or tug at his foley catheter. The sophisticated geriatrician is often called the next day to mop up after errors done the night before by the junior clinicians. We know that avoiding medications is preferable in the agitated elder, but in situations where it is necessary, prompting physicians to use the right medication at the right dose can prevent inappropriate medication administration and minimize harm.
